Anyone feel the crunch on the economy?

Potatos are pretty easy to grow. Just cut up a potato so that each piece has an "eye" and plant them about a foot apart. When the above ground foilage is growing, be sure to use a pest deterrant like sevin dust or the tater bugs will strip them clean.
I am applying to go back to college(I'll be 50 this June) and get a degree in teaching. Read in the paper yesterday that my county is cutting 100 teaching jobs. I guess they had hired all the teachers a couple of years ago to accomadate the illegals. Now that the economy is poor, the illegals are going home and there isn't the demand for all the teachers. Sheesh....

Thank you for that information. Found out the other day, my friend (who lost her job about a month or so ago)....grew sweet tators...so I figure reg tators should be good to go!!!

My friend and I are going to plant certain vegies and swap. Like I grow tators and she will grow sweet tators and we will swap...and we are learning to can :).... oh what fun! LOL!!!

I'll have to check with the city codes (as everyone has to get their hands on your income) and see, if we grow an abundance of something ... if my kids can set up a vegie stand in our driveway. It will be a way to teach my kids too! I know if you have more than 3(?) yard sales, you have to get a permit ($5.00 last time I checked)....so I am sure they will require some kind of license/permit for my kids to sell vegies in the driveway!

Again, thanks for that input on the tators!!!!

PS: talking with my sis the other day, she lives in Colorado and I was telling her how the price of groceries are going up so much and she said they are going down where she's at. I said I don't know how when everywhere else they are going up. Is there something special about Colorado (Parker area) that their groceries are lower? :) And I work in a grocery store...prices are NOT going down.....now you can get weekly sales....but the prices are NOT going down!!!

Laid off February 27th.
Single income household surviving on $2k a month now nothing. No savings, no insurance. 2 kids.

Unemployment pays about half what we were used to. I am applying but getting rejections. Wife will be taking a part time job to fill the gap. Part time jobs are out there, just nothing that pays enough to live off of. After June my son will be in kindergarten and we can get full time jobs, until then it looks very bleak.

I own my home. Our bills are about $1K a month everything included, car, food, TV, PC, electricity and phone. We will have exactly enough to survive on with her not working but with her getting a part time job we will have a small cushion. Sidework helps.

I think that is a great idea....like back in the day....(may still happen in small communties still)...

But like barn raisings....the whole community came out. The men built, the women prepared the food.

My friend and I are liking this swapping thing (bartering). Right now....we just have to wait for the goodies to grow :) and as for canning....she gets half and I get half of what we can.

I am still working on doing an indoor garden during the Winter. Just trying to figure out where I want to put it, the equipment I'll need, make sure I have enough light (most likely heat lamps?) to grow during the Winter. I'm gonna' try, and Pray for the best. This way we could have fresh vegies ALL YEAR LONG!!!

I guess 'Victory' gardens of WW11 will be coming back.I haven't quite had to share my dog's food with me but getting close.I do have deer and turkey and squirrels,so maybe I'll take up hunting again(have plenty of equipment to do that) and the rivers/lakes are only a mile away so there will be fish also.

WHATS UP WITH THE HIGH ELEC. BILLS,THEY SAID IT WAS THE GAS PRICES,BUT GAS CAME DOWN ,PRICES DID NOT
FOOD PRICES THROUGH THE ROOF .GREED!

We're growing enough food to feed us for a week if the critters don't eat it first. But we're city folk.

Here in mid-MO,the groceries are still up about 30% and gas has gone back up to $1.79.Notice from my electric coop says they are going up again,up 36% since 2006.
