Anyone know what this is, Button?

This was found in the back yard of a house built in 1914 at about 3 inches deep. Signaled strong like a quarter. It is brown and there was no rust ring. If scraped a little, a grayish white color appears. The surface on both sides seems worn away in spots and it is of an uneven thickness when observed from the side. The center post is well rounded with very little pitting. The item weighs about 1 ounce or possibly more and is 1'' across.
I was thinking that it might have been a button off of some type of old heavy coat. No thread or other material was found with the item.
