Why would it be marked with English lettering? I was always told that early chinese imports are unmarked or marked with chinese characters. I think in 1890s was when imported items from China were first marked "Made in China" in English lettering. But I may be wrong.

But yours says just CHINA with a backward N so I really dont know.

This doesnt mention the backwards N but its an informative article on dating items from China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea.. Coxsackie Antique Center

I found this: "In 1891 the Mckinley Tariff Act of America required all imports to America to bear the name of the country of origin. So, an item bearing the words – England – or another country, will have been produced on or after 1891."

Now Im just guessing here, but like the guy said in the porcelain link, that a backwards N may be an early attempt at marking a piece in English so that means after 1891. But I have a gut feeling that the mark on your piece was purposely made to look crude. Even the markings in the square stamp look (actually it screams) Psuedo Chinese or its a very poor quality casting of the characters. But Im just guessing. I tried to search but I cant find anything definitive on the backwards N China mark.

I'm not convinced it says china
but I can see how you might think that
IMO, its not very old, crude grind marks, trade tourist item?
But then again, if it was for trade, I think the word CHINA would have to be clearly marked to be able to sell?
Just a thought
