so I have been eyeing up this corner property butting up to a cornfield ...1/2 mile down from an unmarked graveyard...That has no headstones ... established in 1863.....by the family with the same name as the road ...
( researched it)....when I look at a 1933 aerial there was once a large structure close to the corner and across from the graveyard.....so this particular corner has no no tresspassing signs ....but 1/2 mile down there starts a whole bunch of no tresspassing signs and a farm with lots of farm equipment and a sign for sewing work .....so i called (having a bunch of stuff that I could get sewn) sounded like an older lady and she lives at this farmhouse ....so I arranged to drop something off tomarrow.....how should I approach about getting permission without seeming like a stalker :help: if I can get permission maybe some of you guys would like to join me

the spots I want to detect is where houses used to be ......not to close to where this house is.....they seem to be in the borders of where they farm tho

never know until you ask, whats the worst that can happen, a rolling pin upside the head? knitting needle in the eye? :laughing9:

Just keep it simple....

Tell here you had a question about a piece of property down the road, and was wondering who owns it,sounds like you do not know, then add that you research old homesites and such that are long since gone and that you noticed the spot had a building of some sort that was standing back in 1933,then tell her the reason you were asking is because you metal detect and would like to try your luck at the site....pretty basic, seems to work here....good luck...

Soup

(remember folks, more than just MD'ers read this site,a left hook? ,perhaps not the best idea)

I always ask myself, how would Billy Mays do this? Then I follow Skates' lead....

Soupie, right on, casual and with an eye on letting her talk about her history there. Let her TALK, not listen, make conversation that gets her reminiscing and introduce your own interest in finding things like old coins and such.

You do not have to get her to drive that car off the lot immediately, your not selling cars anyway. No pressure.

Wonder out loud what what was on the corner. Oh, her family goes back a long time there? Cool! Any old family stories of local events that were noteworthy?

Sounds like a great "in" already made on your part. For the first few times you get permissions, try to hit the site solo and as you get more comfortable with the people you're dealing with, then see about adding another guy for the hunt now and then. When you know enough about the people to feel free in asking them and are somewhat confident in the answers you'll get, that is.

Soupie - you are the king of smooth talking strangers into inviting you to their land. I bow to you. You should charge consulting fees.

Actually, yes I do need something sewn.
I have 3 new pairs of jeans I bought that are too long.
I've had them at least 4 years and have never worn them because of that.
Every place I went to that had "tailoring" on their window, wanted as much or more than I paid for the jeans just to shorten them.

So if you have success there, and get the OK to bring along another digging partner, I'll bring along my jeans! She benefits and I benefit.
Oh wait - how much does she get to shorten and hem jeans?
