I have seen these dimes at least 1000 times and that is no exaggeration. Someone dipping the reverse side in yellow paint as a way to mark the coin? No idea on if there are 1000's of them out there, or if my coins are just being recycled and I am seeing the same ones time and time again. I come across at least one in every 2-3 boxes and some boxes I have seen dozens.

Anyone else run across these? Could there be another explanation as to how, or why the reverse side is like that? It is always the reverse and never the obverse.

You remember the song Jukebox Hero? ...so put another dime in the jukebox baby, I love rock-and-roll...

As I understand it bar owners used to paint the coins they inserted into these types of machines as a way of differentiating what came from customers and what they put in. I also see lots of painted halves.

odd, i also have a 40% silver half dollar from 1968d with that yellow stuff on the obverse.

At the midstate annual open hunt, they used yellow, green, and white dimes at the competition hunt.
