thanks Crow and IPUK... the treasure legend of Ahmed Shah is also tied with the hard to price vast wealth of the Mughls of india whom he robbed.It is believed to be buried or hidden in present day Afghanistan.Conspiracy theories surround the treasure as well...

Thinking back TT, some years back a story broke in India about a significant hoard of ancient gold.

The story went that a landowner wanted to clear his field and offered local villagers the chance to obtain 'free' soil and fertiliser that had built up into a huge mound in one of his fields. He went away for a few days. A lady from the nearby village took up his offer and went to retrieve some of the mud and soil. She came across an old earthenware pot that are used by the local peasants. She three it with out much thought. Only when it cracked open did it pique her curiosity. She came across old solid gold bangles. She ran home with what she quickly gathered. Her husband returned with her to go through the rest of the mound. Before you knew it, it had descended into a free for all. Several kilos of beautiful ancient solid gold jewellery from the Gupta dynasty had been siphoned off before the authorities could cordon off the area.

The poor landowner was blissfully unaware and away without knowing what his kind gesture had triggered off....

There are still "proper" wild lands and mountains in those south Asian countries, where anything is possible. I recall watching a fascinating programme about a warlord in Afghanistan helping the US search for Bin Laden some years ago, who decorated his house with marble pillars of an ancient Hindu temple and gave gifts of incredible antiquity to guests that he liked. Questioned where they were from, and with a shrug if the shoulders he said "they're everywhere when you know where to look".

If it's a "real" city that has been lost to history that you're after, there is a gold rich place of the Chimus and Moche in the Sechura desert which straddles the Peru and Ecuador border which will throw up some interesting finds.

IPIU The site you mention I have had the god fortune to visits. The days of anyone plundering the site is long gone now. it is Provence of archeologists..

There is another site nearby muich more of interest as it dealt with nearly 300 odd years of plundering grave sites by various Spanish families living there and during the War of Independence from Spain a vast treasure was stolen from there by pirates around 1819.

Ah now perked up old missing feathered Crow who is scratching his beak. Hmmmm most sand dunes there are nearer to coast and nearest to Andes would be near Piura

But I am not sure the site ya referring to? Is it Loma Negra ya referring too? As far as I am aware no city has been found near that ancient burial site with Moche and Chimu, Calvin artifacts among others. There has been a miss mash of artifacts from that region and it is not clear the archeological chronology of that particular site. I did not know there a was city under sand somewhere?

One thing that ya might find interesting archeologist believed that region only worked with sheet gold alloy and never cast objects. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has been flogging off artifacts from their Loma Negra collection yet it is a cast alloy copper gold object their flogging.... In which quite fly's in face of Archeologists assumptions that region only worked copper Alloy sheet metal....

IPUK...what is it about Panama and shady diplomats...have you seen the ''taiolor of Panama''? It is a must watch movie ,as how one british spy tricked his government,the diplomats in panama and the American gov and squeezed millions under thier nose in the midst of a commotion.It is a must watch.

Hello IPIU They say Panama is the Switzerland of South America because of the large amount of banks registered there. I gather your are talking about Francisco Iglesias. He was active in the late 90's There are others that have more cartel connections these days to disguise money ,laundering operations for drug cartels.Lot of shady deals down in Panama. A real nest of vipers. The trio considered a joint venture on a project by individual brokers in the banking industry down there. However hardluck spotted a few e-regularities with the brokers claims.

Doc very few people realize the extent of what has been smugged out of that part of peru over the centuries. Hardluck acquired very interesting documents of what was actually going on by various corrigadors back then. it seem sevearl familes of local corrigadors engaged with the Church there to collect via the native population artifacts of gold and silver and with held them from the Spanish Crown because there was an intense movement of people who wanted independence from Spain at the time.This however all came undone when licensed privateers turned to outright piracy raided their Churches around time of independence and plundered them anyhow.

You've hit the nail on the head regarding Panama, and Switzerland. I recall in during a visit to the latter country, I got into conversation with a Swiss gentleman who had a business selling curios from all over the globe. He quite openly (and honestly) admitted, that his father obtained artefacts by merely bartering cheap store items for gold and silver during the middle of the last century.
