Very good question...

I see them closing 400 production for sure, price point of each is not far off and no sense competing against eachother.

People have been talking about a super Apex, basically waterproof and a few other whistles, I see them going the other route and come out with a cheaper detector in the $250-$300 range to make a play for the low end/budget market, which they currently don't have anything to fit that bill [unless they drop the price of the 400 below the simplex] Even then, the 400 is outmoded, very decent detector that it is. People want LCD display, back-light, adjustable volume and the 400 has none of the above. If they could add just those 3 things to the 400 and drop the price a bit, I think they'd have the low end locked up - They'll make a nice dent in midrange with the Apex, and maybe make a play for higher end next summer with an Apex Pro.

Don't see the AT going anywhere quick by virtue of it being a very capable hybrid water machine - Obviously, an introduction of an Apex Pro would be the death knell for the AT.

I don't know. I can see them retiring the rest of the ACE line and releasing the "AT Apex" next. Then retiring the rest of the AT line.
Optional coils for both afterward, or even during.

Garrett marketing actually called it the “ACE APEX” not the AT APEX. I believe that they chose Apex due to the literal definition

a•pex ā′pĕks►
n. The highest point; the vertex.
n. The highest level or degree that is attained. synonym: summit.
n. The usually pointed end of an object; the tip.

I further believe that the “ACE” association is based on WORLD WAR 2 fighter pilots being the best and the nostalgia associated with metal detecting

Charles Garrett was a US Navy Veteran

Hard to imagine you can make something beyond the highest point then again they did exceed MAX...lol:laughing9:

Is it then everyone's opinion that the Apex's capabilities (other than full waterproofing) exceed the AT Max?

The multi flex is what makes it different for sure
But the main question is if anyone has done a side by side comparison of the AT Max vs. ACE Apex?

The thing that puts APEX above vs Max IMHO are the Separate frequencies 5-10-15-20 Khz... practically 3 Garrett detectors: Class Ace, Pro and Gold

Conversely, the things that put the AT Max way ahead of the present configuration of the Ace APEX to me are that the Apex has: no threshold based all metal mode, no threshold tone in any mode, no present coil choices and its not fully waterproof.

Having developed a simultaneous multi frequency detector without adding waterproofing so far makes no sense if Garrett intends to stop there. Garrett is a great company. They will definitely put simultaneous multi frequency operation into the All Terrain line eventually. That has to be the ultimate goal.
