I heard before to not only look at an area how it is today but to think about what is was like in the past, like this comparison photo of our bridge in town how it looked in the past and how the area looks now, you can see it's the same area cause of the white house.

There has definitely been a walkway removed as well as a flagpole and no telling what else that isn't in the photo.

They redid the area about 8 years ago to put in the roundabout

Ariel view of round about, bridge circled in black, area in red, someday I'll get over to that area.
 
You should try lookin at historic aerials website using the slide feature.

I used a photo of an old house to learn a tree used to be in front of it. I searched the area where the tree would have been to find a V nickel. I posted the event here years ago. ╦╦Ç
 
I always use before and after photos of areas to get an idea of where to search. Maximizes your time spent.

The first photo is a little town history, the second area where it is circled is where that area is, I plan on looking around there.
