Do any of y'all use the BX/PX often? After Katrina tore up the Gulf Coast, the whole base was closed for almost 2 years, so it's been awhile since I've been. But, I do receive the sale flyers in the mail and browse the AAFES website. Normally great prices and with no tax you can usually find one of a kind items there you would not find elsewhere. I run across this in one of the flyers...it was on sale for $55.95, I was wondering if it was a good deal or not. What you think?

Unified Precious Metals Historic Wooden Treasure Chest
Price...$65.95

Imagine the fun of opening your own handmade chest filled with at least 50 old and fascinating coins. You’ll uncover lots of pure copper wheat ear pennies, World War II coins, silver mercury dimes, and buffalo nickels. You may even find a legendary Indian head penny or a famous Liberty nickel or both. Size: 4 1/2"H x 3 1/4"W x 3 1/8"D

Whenever I am at home the BX at Patrick is just down the street from the house, and I am usually there and at the commissary a few times a week. Most of the time you are going to get a good deal at the BX/PX/NEX. However, sometimes you can find the same item at WalMart for less. Of course you add in the cost of gas, and sales tax...
Concerning the item, well I would say that you are unlikely to find any mint condition coins of significant value. Might make a good Christmas gift for your treasure hunting friends.

Similar items are available at cheaper prices from coin dealers and on the internet. If you are buying for children or grandkids find a source for empty wooden chests and then add your own coins. That would save a bunch on shipping and make it more of a personal gift. I'd start with a google search for "pirate chests" and go from there. good luck, siegfried schlagrule

I would shop at a BX/PX....But they really have aggravated me...They originally started out as a way to help the already under payed soldier, however, what benifit we did have with the tax break is used by the BX/PX. Most major items are marked up by that tax advantage. You can get the same item for about the same cost to include taxes downtown. Same for Commisary...

I need an attitude adjustment!...lol...Just my two cents worth...

I stopped shopping at the BX & Commissary when I was still active duty...

I think you can get much better deals elsewhere.

I don't shop at the BX anymore . I get madd because I rairly find any deals there. I can buy stuff down town much cheaper even after paying taxes. ???

My 6 yr old is all about pirates and swords and treasure etc. 55 buckies for a small chest of odd coins, coolest birthday present around. .... Sure beats another gameboy game!! Good deal. oh yea AAFES is: Another Agency F..... Enlisted Soldiers.

Heck, bury the box and give a kid a MD and let him "Discover it".
