Art treasure 2 17th century paintings found in a dumpster.

Hola amigos

I wonder where these paintings have been hiding for nearly odd 300 years?

BERLIN (AP) — German police are appealing for information about the possible owners of two 17th-century paintings discovered in a highway rest stop dumpster.

Police said Friday that a 64-year-old man found the oil paintings at the rest stop near Ohrenbach in central Germany last month.

He later handed them to police in the western city of Cologne. Police said an initial assessment by an art expert concluded that the two framed paintings were originals.

One is a self-portrait by Pietro Belloti that shows the Italian artist smiling and dates to 1665. The other is a portrait of a boy by the 17th-century Dutch artist Samuel van Hoogstraten.

Got to love that self portrait by Pietro Bellotti was born in 1625 and lived to 1700. he was an Italian painter active in the Baroque period.

The Baroque period was a period of intense dark background with face and hands highlighted with paintings of dour serious faces or religious themes.

Yet here we are the artist painting himself full of joy smiling through the centuries screaming out to us in the future. Here I am and here I am wasted....

Wine women song and drunken debauchery..... You can almost see his hand in a okay sign and himself screaming like a party animal out rock and roll!!!!!!!!!!! out from the centuries past his body and head tilted as if intoxicated

It is so unusual for the time period. For me he is a terribly undervalued painter of the period. The painting or a version of it was sold in 2010

Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstraten (2 August 1627, Dordrecht ? 19 October 1678, Dordrecht) was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age, who was also a poet and author on art theory. His painting cam vary from 5000 dollars to 350000 dollars depending on the suspect matter of the work. Perhaps the picture of the boy is worth 8000 to 15000 at auction depending on interest.

So at the very conservative valuation at least 50 grand worth plus of paintings in the dumpster.

Nazi loot?

Quite possible?

The paintings could of been in possession of German family that had a grand parent involved in looting during WW2, Now that the family member passed on. They did not know the value of or want to deal with problems of provenance with such artworks. So for them it was much easy just to dump them.

Another possible scenario they was stolen from a deceased estate and once again selling such items are not easy for small time thieves.

Or a family member with no idea of age and value of such heirloom just dumped them not knowing any better.

The 64-year-old man that found the paintings must be an art expert! I would not have been able to tell it was a famous painting. What if they had just been thrown out and shredded?

Then sadly a tragic waste. It does makes one wonder how many others things are lost that way?
