I would personally think it's natural.

I also believe the hole is due to a Knot/"squirrel hole".

Cool Piece though. I always Keep cool pieces of Drift wood and other

If it were bone or rock and showed workmanship I'd say shaft straightener. In this case it would be hard to prove. Interesting though.
 

Im gona say pine knot hole, ive seen a few. but you can actually make a few dollars of of them with the craft people. i have a lady that takes them when i trim logs up, decorates them and puts little nest and birds in there. she sells the fire out of them. just thought i would tell you all that.

Very cool piece of wood i dont think its an artifact but i would take some polyurethane to it and it will stand out even more.
