I found this in an Indian camp in the middle of the desert. The artifact in the area date to before 1300 AD. I will let you guys post your opinions, and then I will let you the opinion of the local experts on the find. Yes, I do know the answer with 100% certainty, so I won't leave you hanging...

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

It looks like some kind of septarian rock to me. I found one similar to it earlier this year. Yours has some very neat markings on it though. Nice fnd.

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

looks natural to me...even though the little cracks do look like tiny animal petroglyphs. they look like cracks that formed on the individual bubble like protrusions

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

I agree, septarian nodule, weathered.

yep, same here, found one similiar...but dang, the markings on yours is quite intriguing.

Huh. I guess I'll wait till you decide to share the "rest of the story"

P.S. has anyone ever said you have control issues? ;D

Only my wife and parole officer

The markings are intriguing, aren't they. Too good to be true? Maybe, maybe not...

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

lol, those are obviously natural cracks in the rock

Sorry, no cracks in this specimen. solid as can be...

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

I would guess it's sort of both.
a Fossil or geofact

Carved on either for art, to tell a story, Or religous reasons.

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

My guess is a natural rock, but then again I don't know much about western artifacts so it could actually be a fetish of some kind.

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

Hello,
Are the marks etched into it through the patina so that you can actually feel the scratch marks with a finger nail or something sharp?

Very neat find!!

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

ok, ok, here's my take...

North American Indians by nature is a symbolist, a mystic, and a philosopher.
There are legends of entire tribes of Indians who lived in lake bottoms; of races who were never seen in the daytime but who, coming forth from their hidden caves, roamed the earth at night and waylaid unwary travelers; also of bat indians, with human bodies and batlike wings, who lived in gloomy forests and inaccessible cliffs and who slept hanging head downward from great branches and outcroppings of rock.

I can't answer that question yet, it may give too much of a clue as to whether or not this an artifact. I will give the full answer soon. I will tell you that this was found about 200 feet away...

Now you are on to something! It is only a matter of time now... ;D

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

Hello,
It is very difficult if not impossible to determine if it is a Native American artifact with a picture only. Even more difficult not knowing the geology of the area or the tribes that once lived there if any. But if what appears to be carvings on the nodules are cut through the patina and in fact if it was found in the provenience of the point then it would seem likely it is an authentic artifact. The carvings on it are appear to be similar and very in size, number and position.

Just a guess...

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

Hi Ryan, I'm not sure about the rock? But, I'm pretty sure the Triangle? is a snapped point, I see no grinding at the base, where it would have been hafted. Making it difficult to ID.
Glad you came back & reposted. Welcome back. :)

Molly. :) btw interesting post.

Re: Artifact or geofact? Opinions?

I will say .... Geofact on the rock. Also ... the point is from Alibates flint. I Have a lot of it around the rocks around my pool I haven't knapped yet.

Geofact or natural formation on the rock, and snapped Alibates flint artifact.

The material of the point perfectly matches the Petrified wood also within 200 feet of where the point was found. Cool area to say the least. You can't hunt anything there now thanks to good old Clinton. He is such a scumbag that he went to the Grand Canyon to designate a national monument in Utah. I don't think he would have made it out of Utah alive if he would have gone to the area he designated, and I am serious about that. Sorry for the quick rant, that one still upsets me and MANY Utahn's
