My friend and I just got a new permission to hunt a good Civil War site. We turned on our detectors and started picking up a bullet every few minutes. After a couple of hours the landowner came out for what I thought would be a cheerful "how are you guys doing", but it turned out to be an apologetic "I need to ask you to leave".
It turns out that a family member had seen us and was very upset that we were detecting.....we then thanked him for letting us hunt and let him know that we understood.
We ended up with 30 bullets, a nice eagle A button, and a carved bullet. We then moved on to another spot and found a few bullets. Photos are of my finds.

Ah man that's a shame.

Looks like you were in for some really good finds if you'd been able to continue.

Nice finds. At least you got some time in on the site.

Same thing happened to me many years ago in Virginia. I just dug a cartridge box plate and the wrong relative of the land owner noticed me. I had to go.

Ah man! I had that happen last year at a site right after I had a great hunt. Kinda stinks but at least you got some minie balls.

Unfortunate about the given/rescinded permission, but great finds nonetheless :icon_thumright:

Has happened to the best of us. :BangHead: Did you ask what was so upsetting?

The son wanted to detect the property himself......and I don’t blame him.

Congrats on the good hunt!!! That same thing has happened to me several times over the years. You just have to be thankful of the hunt and what you were able to take away from it. Best of luck next time & Happy Hunting!!!!

Oh well, at least it was his son who wanted you to leave, and not some 5th cousin 6 times removed ! Looks like you made some finds before being asked to leave.

I guess I would have offered to teach the son a little about detecting. Makes you wonder doesn’t it.
You did right, thank the man and move along.
You could always come back in a year or so and ask how he did.

Your story reminds me of the time that my Dad received permission from a friendly, older man to do some pheasant hunting on their property adjoining our friends' land. When we got to the top of the hill, the son hastily drove up the hill in his truck and pointed his rifle right at my head, threatening to shoot if we took one more step. I was 13 years old at the time. We weren't even standing on their property yet. To this day, I suspect that he didn't want us to discover the "special crop" he had been growing back behind the trees the previous summer. Why my Dad didn't call the police is a mystery, but it goes to show that crazy relatives are something to watch out for, whether hunting pheasants or CW relics.

Very nice finds, sorry about the lost permision. :occasion14:
