Some of you have probably seen my posts on other parts of the forum, I'm searching for the right detector, it will be my first one. I have read different reviews and have heard some people complaining about constant chatter with various machines. I do realize some of this could be do to user error, or possibly improper ground balance? I guess as a new guy my goal is to keep things simple, meaning I don't want to hear constant chatter from my machine. I have also been looking at some of the Fisher units, but the AT Pro really grabs my attention, and I think the fact that it is water proof will be really nice. Was looking at different places to purchase my detector and there are some really good package deals out there on the Pro. Think I could get one with extras for around six. Thanks for any input.

I have the AT Gold. In All Metal mode at highest sensitivity it makes some noise just from radio reception. Wet sand it pops and crackles. I guess it depends on your tolerance level and what you want from the machine. For prospecting, you want to hear the ground. You can always turn down the sensitivity, threshold, adjust the ground balance window, etc. Normal conditions in Disc 1 and 2 there is no chatter.

The pro is one of the quietest machines I've ever used when ground balanced correctly. With no threshold audio in a clean area like a field I find myself dropping a quarter on the ground every now and then to see of it's still working. :)

Some will defend it some will bash it, opinions vary. The AT Pro IMO is a great machine compared to others in its class. Ground balance, signal strength (if set too high) and frequency have a lot to do with excessive chatter. I can't imagine anyone being unhappy with the ATP if their expectations are not unreal. Let us know which machine you decide on. HH

LOL I do that myself. This thing on ?? Then I swipe my bag. Always carry a spare battery back in it.

some EMS when I'm around the electric rail car tracks but other than that its the perfect machine for me. Any machine will have its pros and cons. All depends on your expectations.

The AT series can chatter around black sand or if the sensitivity is too high in mineralized soil. Good targets will punch through the chatter. In Lots of areas , it runs completely quiet with a proper ground balance.

I love mine, most soil where I hunt other than beach sand, auto ground balances between 80-90's, then I take it down 10 more, sensitivity two segments down. very quiet, unless Iron Audio is on. My first machine, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but it does more than I expected!

I think of chatter as the typical 60hz response from power lines or electrical crap inside the house. Or higher frequencies like cell phones. Or cross talk. Most vlfs suffer from this "malady".
