This past Monday I looked at the weather forecast for this weekend and sh owed nothing but rain for here in Cincy, the forecast down south at my parents looked much more promising. That, and the fact that the pasture CW sites will be soon unhuntable due to the grass growing, I decided to take a couple of vacation days and south I headed Wednesday evening. Thursday my dad and I hit the picket post we have been hammering for the past 6 months. The finds are now becoming few and far between and DEEP, so I told my dad lets hit some parts of the owners property that might now seem like good places for relics. BINGO! First in a small piece of pasture right in front of the owners house sloping down to a highway we hunted for about 1 hour with only a fired minie, then a VERY shallow loud signal stopped me in my tracks....I almost did not dig this signal as it sounded way to much like an aluminum can...I dug a shallow plug with my Lesche, flipped the plug back and out fell a US puppy paw Belt plate! My second plate now in one month! Unbelievably it was only 1 & 1/2" down! I called my dad over without even touching it and he was so excited! He told me later that he knew we would find a plate, as on Wednesday he said it just suddenly popped in his head "we will find a plate this weekend". Nothing else was found in that area besides a piece of folded metal that almost gave me a heart attack...on first look I saw CS, but after closer examination it says CG...ahhh so close, so we moved into another small fenced pasture area where the properry owner showed us the slight depression of an old road bed. Right above there we hit a virgin area about 20' X 40" where apparently there had been a company of cavalry soldiers armed with Merrill carbines. We found 10 dropped freshly molded Merrill carbine bullets along with a ton of melted lead, a eagle C cuff and an eagle cuff back, a strange triangular brass piece that I cannot find in any of my relic ID books..it still has remnants of material on the back...any ideas guys?. Dad and I hunted again Saturday before I had to head back to rainy dreary Cincy, but the pics will show what all we found. Looks like it's time to move the relic hunting into the woods now. HH'ing all!

You sure found the Easter prize this weekend SP!! Nice plate and other relics as well. I think you and your Dad now have an expanded hunt area there that will produce lots more good relics. HH, Quindy.

The triangle shield shaped piece is....

a CW era book/diary clasp. I've found a few in the camp we're hunting.

Great finds!
