Greetings!

After stumbling upon this forum after doing a google search for a place where I can buy cheap rolls of US Junk Silver I've started Coin Roll Hunting. I live a pretty simple life with my wife, no kids yet, so I've got a lot of free time and a ton of disposable income. I figured CRH would be a great thing for me to do...it kills time and it generates value.

I first went to my local bank and ordered 5 Half Dollar Rolls after reading the Newbie Guide here. I found nothing...but I got enough information that told me ordering a box of halves might not be a bad idea. My credit union only gets boxes every week...on Thrusdays. This weekend I was dying to search some more halves...I'm already addicted after my first 5 roll search. After reading some of your posts I txted a buddy from work with a plan. At lunch on Monday (today) we'd take off to a couple of small town banks that weren't chains (and therefore probably held on to their customer rolls instead of using a service to exchange them) and see if they had any half dollars.

We hit up the first bank. Very friendly teller that wanted to help, but had nothing. We weren't turned down, and she certainly wasn't angry with us...and as a bonus, she didn't mention anyone else ever asking for half dollars! Bonus!

We drove on to the second bank. A younger teller had to ask an older gal, who must have been the manager, for some help, but they were able to scrounge together 5 halves from their trays. Because they went through all the work I exchanged them for currency even though none of them were silver. The gal seemed new and I didn’t want to rock the boat, this might be a good bank to establish a connection with.

We were running short on time from our lunch break, and my buddy suggested we try one more bank 10 miles up the road. I hesitated, but finally agreed. When we got there, an older teller had a few in her tray, then said “Lemme go in the back and check” and came back with a canvas bag. She said “We have this bag with $169 in it…which ones do you want?” She then reached in and grabbed a hand full. I am familiar enough with the sound of silver coins from buying them from APMEX that I knew by the sound those coinds made there was some silver in there. I said “I don’t want to cherry pick, you’ve gone through the work of looking for me in the back, how about I buy them all?” She was more than happy to let me take them! She then counted them in the machine to verify $169, I gave her $180, she gave me the coins and $11 back, and out the door I went. My third handful revealed a 1967 40% JFK My first CHR Find! I then started to drive back to work as my buddy sorted out the rest for me in the passenger seat.

We found:
90% Silver
Qty 1, 1964 Kennedy

40% Silver
Qty 1, 1965 Kennedy
Qty 1, 1967 Kennedy
Qty 2, 1968 Kennedy
Qty 1, 1969 Kennedy

Pretty good, in this newbie’s opinion! I’m excited that I was able to find silver. Even if the box of halves I have coming this Thursday don’t produce (My Credit Union orders from Wells Fargo, and they appear to be machine rolled) I know I can turn this from a curiosity into a hobby just by going to all the rural small-town banks in my area.

I’d like to thank all of you here for the wealth of information. Without your advice and tips you’ve left here I wouldn’t have gotten myself a hobby that I’m excited for…it generates value and gives me something to invest my time into.

Welcome to Tnet. Plus congs on your first road trip and finding silver.......Matt

You did real well, six is more than many boxes hold, and you only have 1/3 of a box to dump. You will have days that aren't as good, but you will also have some that are better.

Thanks for the wise words, and words of encouragement.

I took another road trip at lunch. 4 rural banks. 2 Didn't have any (those were banks that were recently built, looks newer). One had 2 half rolls and a couple loose...with nothing in them....the 4th had $1.50 worth in their trays.

$26...no silver. No NIFC.

After yesterday's bonanza, worth it to keep trying to find customer rolls and returns at these older rural banks!
