Ax head (age?) found in back yard last night and met my neighbor in the process...

I was out digging with my granddaughter last night, headlamps on....when a neighbor stepped out onto her back porch asking what we were doing and why we were raking leaves....I explained that we were metal detecting...and I was with my granddaughter....she then asked what was going on in my kitchen....it was a strange thing to ask....I explained that my wife was just cooking...I said if anything was bothering her we would stop....she mellowed and went inside... I suppose if I saw someone out with headlamps on I'd want to know what was going on...I almost said we were just burying a body. .

Anyway, I was curious about the age of this ax head....any thoughts?

I would have gone with burying a body my self. Can't help with age but it does look older than newer. I found a hammer head today. Going to bring it back to life hopefully.

To me it looks more like a hatchet head instead of an axe head.

I was hoping for the axe head to be at least 19th century...I'd be ok with anything pre 1970's in the yard....my granddaughter ran inside to tell her grandma we found an old ax head...for her it doesn't matter what is found, she just loves the mystery and adventure.... Cooking the body is brilliant, even better response! My granddaughter thought burying the body was funny.... she'll have a good laugh at the image of grandma cooking the body!

The area around where the handle would go through is what makes me think a hatchet. An Axe would be more beefier as it was used for splitting wood or cutting down a tree as a hatchet was more for kindling and cutting branches. JMO
