How do we know it is Civil war era? Just trying to learn. Maybe some electrolysis will show a makers mark? A lot of axe makers were commisioned to supply these types of tools and some are stamped. I have a bunch of axes and hatchets but until the rust comes off they are hard to identify in my humble opinion. Nice recovery.

Thanks, it fits the New Jersey ID to a tee. I will be blasting the ax head to look for any Makers marks. Thanks for the great reference chart. Arty
