Well, after a bit of electrolysis and wire brushing the old axe head cleaned up nice enough to display I think.
Thanks again to Mojjax , Buckleboy, and Sentinel for your help.

Wow !! You did a great job cleaning it up. I'd say yes, it is ready for display.

Axe heads do clean up real good. Even ones that are deeply pitted come out nice, And you're right, they do make good display items. You've got to find more.

How did you clean it so good?Did you paint it ?I have found a few but leave them there most of the time. I better start bringing them home.. You have some great finds :)

Nice clean up job MM, looks great! HH, Mike

Thanks everybody. I'm starting to wonder if I've thrown some old pieces away in the past not knowing. I know I've dug many axe heads, hoes, and pick heads on the farms I MD at. You can bet I'll be looking at them a lot better from now on. ;)

RELICDUDE-
No paint on this one. I ran it through electrolysis for a few days, and brushed it occasionally with a wire brush. When I was happy with that, I hit it with a wire disc attached to my drill. That actually gave it a nice shine.

Good job on the cleanup. Looks great for display or put a handle in it and cut some wood!

Well ModernMiner,
You have inspired me to clean my axe heads, I have now found two and I think one got thrown away, but I just found another one the other day.
I may try and accomplish what you did.
Thanks!
Nice job and restoring it, now go chop some wood, milk the cows, gather some eggs and above all swing that coil.

MM,
You did a great job cleaning that up, very nice. After seeing the photo in the book, I think it would look great with a handle on it. Happy New Year and good luck in '08.
