Hello - first post - newbie

My father dug this up in the back garden of his parent's pub in Shropshire UK probably in about 1940. My grandparents had it in the bar of the pub for many years and (being a bit silly) granny painted it with gold lacquer! The village has quite a long history going back to Roman times, so was interested to know if its just simply a wood axe, a battle-axe?
Many thanks

Mark

thanks - don't know who 'Crusader' is though :)
Village is Maesbury - near the Welsh border with England. I don't live there any more - Live in Australia now, but family history goes back there a fair time.

Hi _ am afraid that it is in storage, but roughly, it is 6"/17cm from left blade to right blade.

This is the only photo I have, but here it is attached in higher resolution.

Does this help?

It does'nt look like a axe head, it looks more like some bark stripping , or gardening tool...and proberbly not very old.

Axes, unless they are Bronze Age are not my thing. So I'm clueless.

What I can observe is that it doesn't follow the normal fixing method of old axes. ie. it has a spike instead of a socket.

Hello masevans,

Welcome to TNet, and thanks for showing us your Dad's back garden find. Though I cannot see if it has a socket on the top(?) to receive a pole, it does resemble ye olde Trilance Struss:

Hi..

No socket on the end. Its flat like a blade.

I am really no authority on old items, I had just assumed it was an axe head because it looked like one.

The suggestion earlier in the thread that it was not an axe head at all, could be right I guess. Given that suggestion, I am reminded of the part of a grandfather clock chime mechanism that spins round and round and regulates the speed. Too big for a grandfather clock, but maybe something similar from another type of machine or a church clock? There used to be a mill near the site - maybe something from the mill machinery.

Still - fascinated to learn what it is.

On another note - dad did treasure hunting in his later years and when he died I found his spoils in a box. There are 10 or so Roman coins, but I have no idea how to try and identify them - any suggestions for me?

thanks to all for responding.

No two different events in my dad's life. When he was a child he lived in the little village near Wales where he found the Axe head or whatever it is.
Later in life he lived in Surrey, took up treasure hunting with a metal detector and his local club used to go out to local farmer's fields. The roman coins came from there (did you find the Roman coins post i put up and the Other coins post?)

Many thanks
