OK. Looking at it again I see what you mean. Problem is the US coin means nothing to me in terms of scaleKG6YLL said:Crusader its waaaayyy toooo small for that.CRUSADER said:SkyPirate said:isnt that a suspender clip or a back pack clip?

Here is a quote from a member from another forum who is very knowledgeable on this era of relics. "Whereas the larger tongue & wreath buckles were used on elastic cloth and thin leather belts, these tiny buckles like this were in fact used as various clothing fasteners. A close friend and extremely knowledgeable fellow in Gold Rush period clothing, related to me that he had found reference to a similar small tongue & wreath buckle that was used a a fastener on a patented pre-tied neck cravat (19th century equivalent of a clip on neck tie"

Thanks Buckles and Vayank,I seen that last night, and gave it a stab(on another forum)I also know a general area and what type of site it came out of and guarantee it is 1850,and a Tongue and Wreath buckle. My assumption was that it was a childs,or a doll as I have a wreath that I want to get together with KG6lly,and see how close it is...I think its real close.
The quote that Kg,added above is from a very good friend of mine, and I spoke to the "expert",he was reffering to(he is an expert)as well, its kind of up in the air as a difinate use for these little guys.I can say its way cool!!!!![]()

Kuger that sounds great. Thanks for the backup! Let me know when you want to meet up and I can come "across the river" to meet you.
Ironman! said:Nice find KG6YLL! I have a few questions?
Is it stamped brass or solid cast?
Is the center disc domed or slightly raised?
I have never seen a tongue that is flat?
The picture might be deceiving but is the loop slightly arched? I have yet to see a tongue that is arched, all the ones I have dug or seen are straight.
I attached a few pics. of the baby buckles I have dug lately and most of them this last year. They are all 1870's except the one to the right of the penny which was dug out of an 1850's gold rush camp. I believe it to be from a neckerchief or pre tied neck cravat as Kuger mentioned. The rest I don't have a clue unless for dolls as mentioned before.
The buckle above the penny has a patent date of Feb. 20, 1872 and still has some cloth under one side that is folded over. The last picture I included a full size mans T&W buckle for scale.
Hope this helps!
