Nobody to detect with today so, I went on a solo mission back to my very
1st colonial cellar hole.working it real slow and still kickin downed branches and rolling rotted trees i managed to pluck a few more keepers. a nice designed Cloak or dandy button.a few flat buttons a huge hunk of lead and what I think is a CT copper? slightly larger in diameter than a King George.was a nice quiet enjoyable hunt.ticks are still wicked

Well CAPTAIN COPPER, you have done it again. I can't believe the ticks are still bothersome up there. You will remember 2011 fondly in the future because you have excelled in first class form this year HMN. Happy Holidays and hunting, Quindy.

Thanks Dude! yeah even the tick nymphs are out which is unusual :icon_scratch: it's been unseasonably warm so.....

Hey "Captain Copper" I still can't believe the "ticks" are a problem either (they are nasty buggers where you are.). Awe well, I'll get my passport and walk in front of you, I'll gather all the ticks for ya.

Love the site picture man, cool looking spot. I was out today, nothing much in the old department, but save for one. you'll have to look. (posting soon, it was on my top 10 want list too)

Dec. 3rd...nice weather, but getting short fast now.

Good luck out there Dave.

Nice job man! :headbang: Sweet button and way to go on another copper! I hear ya on the ticks, I stop every five minutes and pull at least one off of me and that's after a good spray of DWO.

Heavy being from F.L. we don't have cellar holes but I was wondering if any buddy ever digs them out like an outhouse for bottles and such ?

yeah i know a guy that did one or 2 and it's a major project.huge stones in the hole and tons of iron.ya figure if the house burnt down(which most did) almost every nail is in the foundation hole too. It's a lot of hard work.one member on here i think got 4 george Washington inaugural buttons doing that. that one paid off no doubt

Captain copper.......haaahah Thats great. I remember one year i found over 40 coppers and here in western NY we dont have the really early history. But from time to time we find those very old sites.....great job on that 1st site. Congrats

somebody on another forum said this hunk of lead may be a flint pad?
he sent me this info below...

it's kind of hard for me to tell not seeing the whole piece but......that hunk of lead isn't the "flint pad" (flint lead) that secures the flint in between the hammer (cock and the jaw screw) for the Brown Bess Musket is it?

It almost looks too big but some of those early flintlocks were huge.

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...=0&FORM=IDFRIR

It's kind of a soft sleeve that wraps around the gun flint so it can be secured in the hammer of the musket. Often times they used a piece of animal skin or a lead sheet.

Actually, the lead flint holders (flint pad) are pretty rare so I hope what you dug is one of them.

Here's one example that I found on ebay if that will help:

It's always fun returning to an old honey hole! Glad it paid off!

That Dandy is one purty button ;D

I found one today similar

That piece with the square hole - what are they? I have found a couple of them. Somebody once told me they are saddle conchos, but I am not sure whether that is true or not.
