I headed back to the 1880 Myrtle School site for a 1.5hr hunt today. It rained heavily here last night, so I thought that might give me some added depth. I’ve been detecting this site for over 3 years; even now, I’m still surprised when I’m able to walk away with a keeper. My first find was the anchor button, this was followed by the 1917 Canadian Large Cent. The Canadian Junior Red Cross pin was an interesting find; it was produced in Toronto in the 1930's. The second shot looking through the pine trees is where the school was originally situated.

Site History

The Myrtle School was a one-room schoolhouse built in 1880 and educated the local kids on this site for 98 years. It was a board and batten building and was covered with insubrick in the late 1940s. In July 1940, the building was raised and a basement was built underneath, the building was demolished in 1978. The property is now a rural park setting and sees little use due to its remote location.

In 1915 a local school inspector stated in a report that, "The Myrtle School is very drafty and the stove had to be stoked with wood frequently to keep the school comfortable for the children." Upon inspection of the outdoor toilets he noted, "The doors have not been properly maintained and allow the snow to collect in the seating areas."

Thanks very much for looking,
David

Thanks very much for your post 12hunt!

It's always great to squeeze a few more keepers from a site, is there much iron at the school?

Nice finds, cool pix, thanks for sharing.

Nice! The place has some large trees also, there's more stuff there for sure!

Oh there's lots of iron here J, fence wire, bottle caps, round & square nails and even dug a railroad spike here last year! :laughing7: There's a garbage can onsite so I deposit all my trash there in stead of bringing it home.

Hope to be in Ktown late next week, think I'll give the Millhaven site one last go before the snow flies.
Dave

Thanks very much for your kind words Dave! :occasion14:
I think it helps put perspective & context behind the finds, as opposed to just showing you pictures of what I've found. I can also appreciate the need to keep productive sites a secret by not giving out too much information on a 'World-wide' website such as Tnet!

Best of luck to you my friend,
Dave
