This bank did not show on the 1899 Sanborn map of Red Bluff, CA but did show on the 1900 so I'm guessing the bank was about 107 years old. The first pic is of a brick-lined tunnel in relation to the bank's vault. The tunnel leads in the direction of the building next door but has been sealed at some point in time. The bank had vaults in the basement area and at ground level as you can see from the pics. One was for safety deposit boxes and, in one pic, you can see one box has been pried open. (I wonder if they checked EVERY box) There have long been rumors of tunnels and how the Chinese used them many years ago and even a bank robbery where the thieves used the tunnels to enter the bank. One of the pics shows some of the original architecture that has been uncovered and appears to be getting saved for some purpose. They even found a horseshoe and placed it on that pile. The bank was originally brick but ended up getting a stucco-like coating. I'd like to at least metal detect the ground before they start rebuilding.
