Barber Quarters from the Grove!

Awesome Finds. Just out of curiosity, how deep were the coins you found?

I bought an Explorer SE last year. Man...I'm frustrated as heck with it. I dig old rusted nails at 7-9 inches all the time because they sound like silver. Just when I'm about to give up...I'll pop a wheat at 6 or 7 inches. This is really the first year I've been using it. Wednesday is the only day of the week that I detect all day, but I'm just not finding as many deep coins as the guys I hunt with. Of course, they are more used to the machine...but man I'm frustrated. I've got 4 silver coins this year, they are all Mercs, and they have all been 6-8 inches...but I'm just not finding consistent deep coins. Are you? Just wondering if you got any tips for me.

Thanks,

Chuck

Hey Chuck,
Which coil are you using?
I use my 5" Sunray Excellerator coil quite often.

In this case the Barbers were both in the 8 to 10 inch depth, which is apparently not a good depth for my small coil.

I have pulled many coins over 6", and several at over 11" with my slimline coil that came with my Quattro originally.

What part of the state are you hunting in?

Slowing down is probably the thing that got me more coins than any other thing I've tried.

Good Luck
Mark

WTG! I sure do love seeing those Barber coins! And congrats on the haircut!

Chuck, try dropping the sensitivity on the SE. When I run lower sens on my machine I still get deep ones, yet rarely dig any nails. Hope that helps, ffd

Thanks FFD!

I agree on the sensitivity too. Even with my Quattro I find that it cuts way down on falsing with all my coils!
The procoil seems to be way more sensitive than either of my others, and that has frustrated me!

The rub: I set the sens on auto yesterday, got lazy, and dug the barbers right off the bat.

Not sure if I've been overthinking the procoil, but that is just not something I've been accused of very often!

Thanks,
Mark
