Hello Everyone,

I spent a whole day with my hunting buds at an old park (circa 1870's) yesterday to see if there was any of that old ground still within reach of our detectors. We ended up going back to a spot that had produced last week for a couple of my buddies. It was the first time at this park for me...I'm not a big fan of hunting parks with known gang activity, plus hearing stories of my buddies past experiences there, but I went this time, and had no problems at all. Anyway, about 45 minutes of arriving, I got a weak high tone signal that I started to dig...I was thinking wheatie. Sure enough, my first extraction from the hole was two wheaties ('17, '20) fused together. I rechecked the hole, and there was still more. After removing one more wheatie from the hole, I then saw a small disk hiding underneath my last wheatie. I removed it and when I saw the reverse of the coin, I knew it had to be a barber or a seated. The coin was worn, in addition to the obverse being defaced by the wheatie all these years. It turned out to be an 1892O Barber dime. Woo Hoo!!! I struck Wilver!! :o Within minutes, I found two more mercs ('35, '41). Since 11 Indian Heads had been dug up in this area last week by my buddies, I was hoping that they left one for me...I finally got a signal next to iron that sounded zinc'y and was deep. Sure enough, I got my Injun...an 1888. I could hardly detect around this area without swinging over previous plugs that were dug over the past two hunts there. I was hoping to hear another deep signal, and sure enough, right next to a couple plugs, I heard a very faint high tone....at about 7.5", I finally heard the sound of a coin with my probe in the bottom of the hole....when I saw the wilver, I knew it was old....a nice 1911S Barber dime....Yes!!! I then moved back to the area that produced my first barber, and recieved a very good high tone at about 4.5". I was thinking quarter, but was very surprised to dig up what looks to be an old Victorian cameo brooch, which is wrapped in a wilver bezel. I was very excited about this find!! :o My very first find of this type....I've been staring at this find the most since my trip to that old park yesterday. It was a lot of fun. I think I'll be going back soon.

The other wilver was found over the weekend and on Monday at various other well hunted parks that I've pounded in the past. Lots and lots of wheaties too... ;)

Thanks for looking,
CAPTN SE
Dan

Great job Dan. That lady is not a tramp. I don't know if I could hunt in a place where I had to keep one eye open in the back of my head. hehe
You the man Dan....HH

What more can be said?

You obviously have mastered the electronic settings of your Explorer to push it to the limits! Not to mention the craftsmanship of the hobby.

Have you thought about searching in close proximity to the Spanish mission settlement areas?

I think if you find a silver reale that would be the pinnacle of an outstanding year. What do you think?

Congrats on a BANNER year!

I am never going to California now. There is nothing left. The place is a barren wasteland.

Yea, but we don't have nice beaches with gold rings, necklace's and other jewelery or do we get many gold coins. Not much gold in upstate NY. In the ground or on people, most people can't afford much gold. Let alone lose it around here. Also when gold coins were around, not many of the gold coins made it east. ;D

Nice Digs, WTG!!
Keep @ it and HH!!

WTG Capt Dan!!You gotta slow down or I gotta quit my job or I'll never catch up!LOL That brooch is awesome too.As always very impressive and congrats! Bootstrap

Very nice finds, Captn. Sounds like a great day of hunting.

Hey SE, my question is, is when silver finds slow down, do these areas you hunt have a possibility of gold coins? I think most find gold around Spanish missions, but just curious?

Gorgeous cameo....amazing silver.....another great post, Capt'n! :)

Nice finds and that cameo brooch is sweet!!!

great finds Capt'n WTG ;)

Thanks a bunch, everyone, for your replies. Much appreciated!!

Yes, I'm still looking at that brooch I found. I'm headed back to that park on Mon. One of my buddies produces a metal detecting show over here and he's going to do some filming of me that day. Should be fun.....I wish he would have filmed this hunt. It was a good one.

Jack, only a few of the areas I hunt at have the possibility of gold coins. Actually, the park that I made all of these finds at has a good chance for a gold coin. Two that I know of have been found there back in the 80's. I don't hunt mission sites. Just parks. All the silver and wheaties I've found this year were from park turf. There's so many parks here in my area.

Thanks again,

I hope you pull a gold coin, but sure can't complain about your silver count!! And with all those Parks I doubt you can put a dent in any one of them for some time to come!!

That's a really nice brooch! Congrats on all the other great finds, also. Keep em coming!
