The other day I stopped at a local property that is going through a major renovation. I stopped to get permission to hunt the yard while everything is tore up. I located the owner who lived near by and talked with him about what I wanted to do and he was more than happy to have me hunt. He told me that him and his young son had a cheaper detector from walmart but didnt really know what they were doing. I had them get it and I worked with them shortly explaining to them what there adjustments were for. They soon wanted to see mine so I walked to the car and got it for a little front yard demo. The son was really interested at the noises and was soon trying to unearth a penny signal at 4 inches with a stick. I helped him out and we popped out a 1916-D wheatie. I showed him the unique design on the reverse and he found that interesting. Our conversation was soon over and I thanked him for the permission telling him that it would probably be thursday, "Today" Before I would be able to get to it and he said that was fine. Well, today I stopped after work and noticed right away that there was about 8 different obvious holes in the yard that had not been filled. Some of these holes were near 7 inches deep and totally clean of any metal object. I'm not sure if it was the owner and son for a return trip with there detector or someone else sneaking in on my action. Either way they missed a few!! At first I was kinda bummed but then told myself that I have pulled silver from many hunted out places before. Soon I was digging a 4in target that was just screaming silver. I unearthed the silver ring with little effort and it put me in my happy place! Continuing to hunt, I pulled some more wheaties and a neat button along with some nickels and clad. Working along the sidewalk I recieved a good dime signal at about 5in or so and while digging the hole I noticed 2 fat roots running directly on top of my target.
I dug down next to one of them after cutting the other one out of the way. Using the sunray I could tell that my target was right beneath the remaining root. I dug down the other side of the root and using my digger I pushed the dirt out from under the root exposing my second prize for the day. It was a very detailed 1943-D Merc. It makes my first silver coin of the club year and I couldnt be happier to get started out like this. The ring I dug up has indian style designs and is pretty thick! It fits on my right pinky and i'm debating on wearing it.
The wheaties for the day are 1940-S, 41-D, 42-D, 44, and 45. Also in the pic is the 1916-D that I dug the other day.
I'm looking forward to getting this season going and have a few good sites in line for the fall season when weeds are down and crops are pulled. 8)
