Definately. Looks like an 1853 Enfield initially, but if cruciform (four ridgges) might be a Mosin-Nagant 1891, but may prove different when you get it cleaned up. Does not appear to be an 1861 Springfield bayonet . . . but I may be wrong.

When you get it cleaned, please post a close up of the socket, and the whole thing with a ruler for scale, I think what you have could be an M-1855 bayonet, based on the shape of it... I'll need better pics to be sure.

Where is a reliable source I could look up additional info? How would you clean?

I would start with a brass brush and carefully knock off all the loose rust and dirt, then soak it in apple cider vinegar for a while, that should remove the rust without damaging the metal underneath. It'll take a few days, so be patient. Once you're satisfied, heat it up in the oven to around 450 degrees, and give it a coat of gun oil.

Thanks, I'll try some of these cleaning methods on ox shoes before the bayonet.

It's in electrolysis now. Hopefully will be done soon.

Do not let that socket section over cook. Look forward to seeing the cleaned version . Nice find!

I was gonna let it cook for another couple of hour to get those last few deposits off. What do you think? Has it cooked long enough?
