A good friend of mine here in Kentucky took me to one of his spots this Saturday. It was a Union Camp next to a firing range.

We hunted the camp and found a few dropped minis, then he took me to the hillside that was used as a backdrop for the rifle range. My buddy had found nothing but fired bullets on that hill....that was until I found this Eagle Breast Plate when I thought I was digging a fired mini ball.....ROOKIE MISTAKE!

I put the shovel right through that plate....Lesson Learned!

Here is my take for the day.

ouch....

I know I've had alot of coppers that I scratched trying to pry them out of the frozen ground up in Maine. Some of the nicer ones didn't end up being so nice after my digger got a bite of it....know the pain my friend...know the pain.

You just have to think...."There's a nicer one waiting for me some where"

lol

I know the feeling as well... I did that to a US Belt Plate a couple of years ago >:( . Damaged or not, it's still an AWESOME find!!

Bummer! But like PF said...still a great find :icon_thumright:

That reminds me of the time I scratched a 1735 eight reale cob digging it about 15 years ago. I was blown away by the find, then looked at the reverse and it had a shiney streak where I hit it :(
Glad to see you got out Robert--nice digs!

Very Nice finds,
i know how it is to hit a Great find. 2009, I was pinpointed on a Square nail and found that there was a beautiful 1837 Capped bust Dime in the bottom corner of the plug, which i struck with my Digger. It happens , but you won't never forget it.

What makes you sure your digger inflicted the damage ??? :icon_scratch: I have seen them wacked by farm machinery and trampled by cattle . There is a chance you didn't hit it :) unless you heard a crunching sound or it was a dead on spear hit . :o Looks like existing break . Still a cool find. . :icon_thumleft:

That sucks but it looks like it was pretty much toasted anyway so I wouldn't feel too bad...the next one will be the keeper!!

I second the ouch, look at the bright side, at least you found it and it
won't rot in the ground. That will still look good in your collection.

congrats on the plate! nice find even if it is not in good shape anymore!

:icon_scratch: I guess that's a lesson learned the hard way but, a great find anyway. :read2:

Can't cry over spilled milk unless the cow has dried up ! It looks like it was not in one piece to begin with ! And you still got all that nice lead ! MaineRelic

Hey, if anyone here says they have never done that, they are lying.

That's the way it goes.

I agree with Mike. He does that all the time. :tongue3: :laughing9:
Excellent recoveries.
Congrats,
MM
