Wife are down here in Louisianna doing some computer work for my company and decided to do some beach hunting (we are from Kansas City so we don't get to do much beach hunting). Well after picking up River Rat we set out for the Biloxi area to find a beach. We were aware of the devestation that Katrina did around the New Orleans area 2 years ago but thought everything would be back to normal by now but we were wrong. We spent a lot of time just driving around looking for a beach that wasn't closed. The one beach area we found that was opened had signs up saying to stay out of the water due to sorm debris. I guess the huricane took all the sand off the beach, we were talking to a local who told us that they dumed about 4 feet of sand in the area that we were at just last year. Well needless to say there wasn't much to find. I won't say what my wife or River Rat found but I came out of there with $0.90 (11 coins). It was still a great time and it was good to see and spend some time with River Rat and her husband. We took some pictures of the devestation near the beach but the battery in the camera died and I didn't bring the charger for it. When we get back to Kansas City tomorrow I will post the pics.

Thanks for reading and happy hunting!

Duo,

I'm glad you and River Rat got together, but it stinks that you could not find a beach..Glad at least one of you found something...Look forward to the pics and have a safe trip home.

Outback,
That's a long way to go for $0.90. :D Sorry it didn't work out for you like you planned.
Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Wow if the storm took out all that sand, just imagine what you could find!!!! I would be tempted to go to a closed beach (with a cheaper md ((in case of consfication)).

Wow! 4 feet down, what would that be? 100-300 years ago??? Hmmmmm......... ;)

Its always good to get out even if you don't find a lot of stuff
Happy Hunting

Computer work for your company, Ha... Sounds more like you had it all figured out to meet up with River Rat, and go detecting to me... ;D Too bad about the beaches. You would think they'd have those repaired by now...
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Even though I woke up Friday morning with a chest congestion, I was hestitant about going...even if it was for a few hours. I finally gave in and tagged along. Just driving in the area trying to remember where certain landmarks were supposedly located that was no longer there. There's a lot of construction going on to rebuild Biloxi.

As for what I found, lets just say the beach area is a little more cleaner from the metal junque I picked up and disposed into the trash cans.

Thanks, Don and Becky for the great time we had on this venture. That's the main thing that counts...being able to hunt with fellow TNet'ers even if we didn't find any hidden treasures on the beach.

The pictures below are of Beauvoir (Jeff Davis' home) before and after Katrina...I forgot my camera so these are from the web.

;) RR

Wow, thanks for the post. Too bad a bunch of detecting clubs couldn't go down there and find and return valuables to the people who lost everything. Just a thought!

I worked in biloxi for awhile after the hurricane, I don't know if that place will ever recover..
The Beach is really to trashy to hunt but Theres an old park close to Atkinson Rd and veterans Ave that i dug a few silver coins. Good Luck ;)

I can only dream about the Hard Rock casino that was ready to open the week Katrina hit.
I heard that the place was loaded with ATM's and slot mahines, etc. - ready to go.
Wonder where all that loot ended up?

Well glad you all got to go huntin! Always great to have huntin buddies!!

Nana :)

Sorry to hear you all weren't able to find anything. Yeah, the place is still struggling...just as it is in SE La. I'm not sure if things along the coast will ever be the same.

NO doubt that there are treasures to be found...so many people lost so much...just no telling where it all ended up. My mom had just sold a house in waveland (2 months prior to Katrina) and the woman who bought the house was from somewhere up north and wasn't aware of how to "prepare" for possible loss. Needless to say, the house was gone and so was about $150,000 worth of jewelry. She put it all in ziploc bags and left it in the house.

I plan on going over there with my mom to mess around and see if we can help her find anything...but chances are probably slim to none. Problem is just as in La. Everything that was on everyones property has been bulldozed and brought to landfills...that's where everything is. But...so much of it could be 50ft. deep or more...may NEVER be found.

Sad....

Glad you all were able to spend quality time together though...hopefully, next time...I can join!!!
