I would try a piece of PVC pipe and ditch the wood handle. H2O proof adn lighter than the wood.. S/B able to buy one at home depot, lowes etc... let m eknow if it works.

Guzz , I have an all aluminum one smaller than yours but big enough I just bought from Kellyco that I might trade you for if you want. I need a bigger one since I am always in the water and not the dry. I can email you a photo if you want

Hey Bill Thanks for the offer but I have one of those already .. looking to get just a bigger one with a larger basket..aluminium is going to solve the weight issue. Thanks bro Guzz1

What are you asking? I am coming to Ft. Myers next month and I am looking for one. I have the aluminum one also and I did not like using it in the saltwater sand. It seemed hard to dig with to me, but I am used to freshwater sands.

Guzz1...i don't believe you are going to be able to tell a lot of difference between a heavy walled aluminum handle and the wooden one on your scoop now.....if you decide to sell ,pm me please with a price...we are going to try to be in your area possibly Thursday or Friday and could pick it up then

SOUNDS GOOD RDI Check your mail I sent you   guzz

Guzz,

What does your scoop weigh with the handle? I now have the Beach Brute II, it weighs 4.9 lbs with the handle... It is a virtual backhoe and now comes with a handle that comes apart, I was worried it might be a little weak at that point, but I was totally wrong. The handle is thicker then the original Beach Brute and takes every bit of abuse I give it with no hlnt of failure ........

Strong XXX Strength Aircraft quality Aluminum scoop, no-slip foot pad. 2-part handle design for ease of portability when you are traveling and space is tight. All welded construction for strength. Overall basket size: 12.0 deep x 8.5 wide x 6.0 inches high, total handle and basket length is approx 57 inches, weight 4.9 lbs.

This one is 4#. I think it's a little heavy also. But.....I bought it to save my knuckles & legs.

Takes a little getting use to. I got the slant back.

Check it out.

Thanks guys for all your help .. I'll decide this week on which one I'm going to purchase . I'll let you all know what I end up with.. Guzz1

I checked out both the other 2 before buying, but went with the beach brute because it is wider by 2 to 2.5 inches and the total length is 9 inches longer, making it easier to work in the surf and giving me more leverage .

Guzz, sorry it took so long for me to get online and answer, but I don't think you are going to get it any lighter by using a different handle and keep the strenght. Most of the weight is in the basket which drains extra fast compared to many scoops. I just drag mine along but I've seen others, Max of VA beach for one that has a holster with a hook to hold the scoop at his waist. The holster is a modified carpenters hammer holder. Pic is of another hunters holder, Philbees does it this way.

Years ago I tried a floating sifter and floated the scoop on that till I needed it. That doesn't work in the waves of the coast though.

Good Luck,
Sandman

Thanks Sandman ,, sold the scoop last night .. I'm on the hunt for lighter scoop .. Researching now thanks a bunch for you reply . i'll let you know what I end up with. I didn't think changing out the handle would help.......... guzz1

Some of the screen basket type are lighter and very fast sifters for dry or wet sand, however it is hard to dig deep with them because the sand pours thru the holes faster than you can dig. These you can't set on the bottom without holding on to them so a holder would come in handy.

Good Luck,
Sandman

Just buy the diamondhead from nuttall.......it is and has been the best scoop out there DON'T LISTEN TO THE HATERS lol

Gotch ya ,,, I been looking at it ... my buddy Glenn from NYC has one .. likes it too. Guzz1

Buy the shorter, smaller one it's only 9 inches shorter and 2 inches narrower.........LOL ........ Just kidding ya................. ;D

Love the Nuttall scoop Guzz1 that diamondhead is sweet. I have the straight stainless model which I like because it doesn't flop around. The aluminum scoops might be lighter but you waste time and energy trying to get it and hold it in the area you want to dig when you're in the surf.
I have not used the new Nuttall scoop with the fiberglass handle but I read Chi Town Bruce has the new one and is very happy with it, he had the all stainless model too.
Good Luck!
Glenn
