Heya! Been lurking on the forums for a while just reading all kinds of compelling stories about detector finds and all that comes with. Im taking a trip to Thailand for half a year with my girlfriend and thought i should give beach and sea detecting a try when im there.

im tinking about spending like 100-200$ on it and want a detector that works for beaches and underwater detecting. If its not too cumbersome thats even better. We're gonna travel around alot, so i dont want something that gets too much in the way.

So what u guys think? Am i asking for the impossible here? Does anyone have experience of traveling with your detector or the beaches and sea sites of Thailand? Any help is appreciated!

I really don't think you'll get a decent water machine for $100-$200. Just my opinion. Good Luck!

i agree 100.00 to 200.00 very hard to find, even used. alway get a used land machine and just hunt the beach.
i hunted alot in the philippines, just check in early and take the batts, out of the machine, if ur going to carry it on.

U think it would be possible at all to travel with a good beach/sea detector?

I don't see why not. They break down pretty small. I'd try and carry it on board.

So what u guys think i should invest in? Iv heared alot of good things about the Tiger Shark n the exal.

I would get a good one used or new, and after you return if your not completely hooked, you can sell it. I would also get it and learn it before you go, not wait till your there to learn it.

I have never used the Tiger shark, but heard good things about it, I have the Excal and love it. Besides being a fantastic machine, it holds its value on resale.

Two suggestions, if by chance you do get an excal, get the straight shaft to go with it. The stock shaft will kill your arm if you detect long. The other is to get a harness, it really helps on long hunts. All 3 of mine are set up for a harness, the harness supports the weight, you just guide the coil.

Good luck and Good Hunting.

The Tiger Shark (about $749) works very well, as is, out of the box with out buying more stuff. Just add 8 AA batteries. It's well balanced on the supplied shaft, which breaks down quite easily. The control box easily snaps off of the shaft and it will all pack up and fit in carry-on luggage. The coil is 8" diameter and will pack nicely as well.

I use the Sand Shark (about $679)

They are both a bit less than the Excal.

I've never broken down an Excal and tried to pack it.

Excal owners, how small will it go?

I have never measured mine so I can't give measurements, but it will break down fairly small, even if you have the straight shaft. No problem fitting it in a suitcase.

The control box and battery break down although the coil does not disconnect from the control box.

The price for the Excal is at least twice that of the Tiger Shark even used, but it will descriminate out iron, and it will see gold next to, below or sitting on top of iron. You know the iron is there as it nolls out, but you know its iron. Like Sand Man said, I also have never dug a noll that was anything but a piece of iron. If bored I sometimes dig nulls just to see what they are, every single time they were pieces of trash iron.

Good luck

You can definitely travel with a beach/underwater detector. My Excalibur goes on just about every trip to the islands with me. I have a travel shaft for it... and it breaks down to about 15" long (just the width of my WOT coil ;D)... if i don't bring my 8" coil instead.

Before I got my excal, I had a White's Surfpro PI that went just about everywhere with me... same thing as my excal,... broke down pretty small and I'd strap it to the outside of my camelbak. Knowing what I know now, I'll never go to another island without bringing my detector. I've made some GREAT finds on the beaches in the Carribean.

but... like was already said, you're not going to find a decent water machine for $200. My advice would be to check on ebay for a used beachunter id, or excal. I pd $500 for my excal from an ebay seller. A lot of it is "right place, right time". and if you want some good bidding tips, drop me an email

good luck
steve

While you cannot take it into the surf, my White's M6 works well on dry and wet sand. Downside is that it is about $600 and I know you only want to spend $200. On the upside, you have a detector you can take to the beach or to the schoolyard. I agree with the others, you won't find a good beach machine for that price. Your best bet may be to buy and old, used pulse detector on ebay if you can find one.

I just returned from 3 weeks on the west coast. Carried the Xcal in a case, see pix:
The case was searched on every flight, my TSA lock was removed and not put back, and twice I was asked if it was a firearm. There was no damage and traveled very well this first time out. Easy to break down and reassemble.
My dive gear gets searched regularly also.

Tek, what is the dimensions of your case, is it 15 inches wide inside?

Case is 14 x 36 on the inside. It is a Pelican 1700 from Kellyco.

Darn a 15 inch WOTcoil want fit inside then.... Send me an IM if you ever want to get together on a beach hunt.

Thanks.

The case is about 5" deep, so you might just fit the WOT on a diagonal. The cases come in all sizes though.

Im gonna look around a little and see what i come up with. If you know of anyone going to thailand for detecting, pls tell me :)

Close to it! No decent detector for salt water hunting that is currently around, even used, will go for that. 300-500 - yes. That low, no.

The Tiger Shark is a good detector - I have one. Paid $375 for it used. How good is it in the salt water where you will be going? No idea. It is not the ideal salt water machine, since it is a single freq VLF. It works, though, and many have success with it. I'd call it a good choice.
You might also want to have alook at the Garrett Sea Hunter II. It's a PI unit, so it has little DISC, contrary to company claims. BUT, it can be had used for about the same money as a Tiger Shark. I'd call it a good option, too.

But what is most important is where you take the detector. No sense going to beaches that are unpopulated. You're going to want beaches popular with Asian and Euro tourists. The good side is you will probably be alone with no competition. The bad side is you will be alone, in a foreign country. Many is the tourist who has run afoul of both criminals and the law under such circumstances. Find out about THOSE things before you go.

Does anyone have experience of traveling with your detector
Yes to traveling. Most detectors break down into pretty small packages and with a little planning you can create a tidy little "suitcase detector."

Not so a sand scoop. I have yet to see the scoop worth having that breaks down well into a compact bundle. In fact since you dont know what sorts of beaches youll find, you need to prepare for the worst by having the strongest. Most of these dont break down at all, so youll be carrying the thing everywhere with you as is. You may also want to check with the airlines first - things change all the time with them.

Also, some countries will confiscate your detector on two broad premises:
1. You're planning to take national treasures or antiquities
2. You are importing such a device without paying duties.

When I went to Mexico last time, I was told by the Mexican tourist people that there were no SPECIFIC metal detector restrictions, but that mine might be snagged at customs for one of the above reasons. I was told that customs officials don't normally listen to pleas of innocence on these matters and since you are planning to stay 6 months, they might listen to even less of them. Others have told me the same things about several countries. Will this happen to you? Probably not. I've known people to whom it HAS happened, though. They were fortunate in that they had a plan to mail the detector back home BEFORE they passed customs. Are you gonna check into it beforehand? Yes, if you're wise....

I live in Thailand, and carry my excalibur back and forth to the USA. I break it down, and carry it in my suitcase. I assume that you are coming here on a tourist visa, if so you should have no problems at Bangkok customs! Simply walk through the nothing to declare line.
As to a $100 to $200 beach detector.....................Good Luck with that!

I have just come back from Tunisia detecting with the excal, no problems at all. My travel scoop is a home made 3 section stainless steel one that I have used for the past 4 years and taken abroad on a number of occasions, weight about 2.5kg. Material came from a scrapyad that breaks busses, the shaft is from a passenger hand rail, fixings are press-in spring press clips like minelab use, basket was fabricated from perforated 16g stainless and strengthened with odd bits from stainless steel seat trims. Works a treat and never let me down.
Excal brains, coil and headphones all pack into a computer lap top case and are inspected by security at every airport I have gone through, good idea is to carry a picture of what it is with it from adverising article etc, saves a lot of explanation when English is not their normal language.
Off to Croatia, Majorca and Poland later in the year, so many beaches................ as Sandman says.

Good luck to all
