Heya! Been lurking on the forums for a while just reading all kinds of compelling stories about detector finds and all that comes with. Im taking a trip to Thailand for half a year with my girlfriend and thought i should give beach and sea detecting a try when im there.

im tinking about spending like 100-200$ on it and want a detector that works for beaches and underwater detecting. If its not too cumbersome thats even better. We're gonna travel around alot, so i dont want something that gets too much in the way.

So what u guys think? Am i asking for the impossible here? Does anyone have experience of traveling with your detector or the beaches and sea sites of Thailand? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks alot for all the info guys. Really apriciate it! Iv realized im gonna have to spend a little more than i expected, which is no promlem in it self really.

The main reason i want it cheap was because i dont want a 500 dollar detector stolen at some random beach in Thailand. But i guess ill just have to choose my beaches and days carefully. Bet there are loads of things to find at the fullmoon party beach for example.

Again, thanks for your time.

Insure the detector against loss, damage or theft. Can't cost all that much for a $500 detector. But if something does happen, you can get reimbursed and back in business in short order. There must be an international insurance company, like Lloyd's, who can do that. Bound to be one in Thailand, at least around Bangkok...

Consider, too, which detector maker might have a presence in Thailand. Im thinking Minelab and maybe Tesoro.

You might be able to get a Whites Surfmaster PI on ebay for 350-400.00. Depending on the auction. I have had good results with my Surfmaster with targets at 15 inches. Now you do dig junk till you get use to the pulse delay but I like to dig every target to see that I miss nothing. And you can use it on the beach.

Motwister, do you think it would fit a suitcase of reasonable size if dissembled? Iv read alot of good things about the Surfmaster P1. Also, do you know how deep it goes under water?

You may be able to fit it in a suitcase but just barely. It comes apart in 2 pieces with the tubing. And the control head can be removed also. As far as depth it will go 18 inches on a 1 ounce silver coin. As for jewelry I'm not sure how deep it will go as I haven't been to the beach to try it out yet and the fresh water targets that I dig are not more than 8-9 inches deep, but they are rings and silver chains. I have not found any gold chains with it yet. Whites may sell a hard case for these detectors.

Its waterproof to 100 feet.

Does anyone here have any experience with Garrets AT4 Beach Hunter ?
