I am heading back to Peru in a few weeks to visit my wife's family. I am going to bring along my detector this time around. Has anyone here ever detected the beaches in Lima or know of any shipwrecks around the area? I look forward to hearing from anyone who has. Thanks!

We are not ignoring your question Philvis, maybe nobody here has experience that far south of the border.

That sounds like a cool place to detect, the best of luck to you, and don't forget to get some photos!

No worries Sandman. Thanks for the response though. I figured it was a shot in the dark, but I wanted to just double check ahead of time. I've been to Peru many times, but never thought about bringing my detector and since I just got a Tejon, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity. Having family and friends there opens the door to some great possibilities in where I search, but I was hoping someone with experience there may be able to give some pointers. My wife said she doesn't ever recall seeing anyone detecting there and she grew up about 15 blocks from the beach. The entire area is a time capsule, but the archaeologist in me only wants to detect the beaches or other isolated area for Spanish contact coins, etc. I will definitely take many photos and keep everyone interested updated.

Try to google the area where your going to be staying , that might answer some ? you might have . I have never been there so I can't help ya ... But make sure you have good time and check out there laws on treasure hunting , Hate for you to get in trouble ,,  HH guzz1

Philvis,

Perhaps this may help answer your question. I was at the FUN (coin show) conference in Orlando this year (January) and met a guy from Lima. He was selling Potosi and Lima reales. He told me that he finds these on the beach off Lima. He didn't give more specifics but at least this shows that people are detecting down there. Now, this does not say if metal detecting is allowed or not on the beach off Lima. I know that Peru and other South American countries have antiquities laws that can be applied if they choose to do so. Just be careful! Good luck!

Hope that you find some reales! Take pics and let us know about your Peruvian adventure!

Happy Hunting!

then again he could be full of ****

Thanks for the info Moe. I worry more about the hoodlum street kids than the police. The police are very cooperative if you donate $5-10 to their cause. I will just steer clear of the rougher areas.
