found this today on the plantation, it's brass, broken at 3", has a padded end to it . it also has 2 small hole's. i feel it may be a boxing, fire bell hammer.
i think it is too large to be a clock hammer.
wonder what brought it to a 1803 plantation?. it was about 12" deep near where a old road once ran thru the property.

Looks like a broken chain tension guide arm for an engine.

If that round disc on the end is rubber or plastic, it's likely the item is not all that old.....less than 100 for sure and likely less than 50. It would not have survived being underground without dissolving before now. Is it really brass? The photo makes it look like pewter/pot metal/aluminum.

Kinda looks like part of a motorcycle brake shoe but Ive never seen one with rubber tip.index.webp

The rubber, or hard plastic tip is where the tensioner would push on the arm to tighten the chain.
I'll see if I can find a pic
