Well I'm really not sure what this is. When I hold it I can't help but think it was a bell. But it seems to be made out of lead. Never heard of a lead bell before. The only decoration on it is 2 lines that run across it. It was found at a site that has 1860 stuff to current date junk. I'm interested in what it is and when it is from thanks.

Do you really think it's a scabbard? I've never seen one before in person. I thought normally they were out of brass. I don't know, it's definately lead and it's seem heavy to be a scabbard. But I have to say the more I think about the more I can see it being a scabbard.

I don't think its a chape to a scabbard. As you say, wrong type of metal. Looks like a finial to a decorative ?? (its a simple acorn design) It looks like it was rounder before being squashed.

I missed that it was lead... I'd re-think the scabbord tip thing too.

Finial to... something.

dimensions?

If that's your kitchen table and the thing takes up that much space it must be 3-5 inches long. That'd be a whopper of a sword.

This may be a fence post topper. Old fence work often used lead toppers. I've not seen one this big, but it may be that this size was used on corner posts and haven't survived much. I have a section of old ornamental fence with smaller lead ornaments at the tops of uprights. If you opened the bottom half up, it would no longer be a cone. It would have a cylindrical bottom section that would slide over a metal post.

No it's probably 2 inches tall by 1 1/2 on the bottom. The black card it is on in the picture is a gift card.

Agreed...I think fence post cap is headed in the right direction. When looking for parts to restore my own fence, many of the caps I came across were lead and the acorn shape was quite popular.
