Great find !!
The coin, if anthetic, is a 'follis', was minted in Nicomedia (NIK mint mark), an ancient Greek city located in what is now Turkey.
The mint was operational between 498 and 627AD.

The large "M" design, appearing on the reverse, was introduced by Anastasius in ~ 498AD. It's a Greek letter indicating the value in 'nummi'; M for 40 nummi--a follis coin--versus other letters that would designate other values ('K' for a half follis, I for ten nummi, E for five nummi, etc.)
Don.......

The Regnal Year, shown as either a Roman 'XII' or 'XIII' to the right of the 'M', represents the 12th or 13th year of reign; or between 538 and 540AD. To have been minted in 542AD, the coin would show a 'Roman' 15 or 16.

That's a cast copy, it appears to be made of pewter or pot metal and has squared edges with obvious file marks. A genuine Justinian follis with an impressive 40+mm diameter isn't terribly expensive if you're interested in obtaining a real one, the big ones are often from the Cyzicus (KYZ) mint in my observation.
