For a handheld unit that works for a boat too, you might want to look at the Garmin 76Cx. It's got kind of a small screen for boat use but it's light and easy to carry and it's waterproof and will float if dropped in the water. You have to buy Garmin's "Bluechart" mapping software for water navigation. The sotware is $105 when purchased from Amazon with the GPS. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSP000?tag=treasurenet01-20

If you want something bigger for mounting on the boat, Garmin also makes chart plotters and combo depth sounder/GPS units.
