My son is interested in buying a new metal detector, but he said he must keep the price in the $400- $500 range. Any suggestions about the best models? He's new at the game so an all- purpose unit seems the best idea. I suspect most of his activity will be hunting for coins and jewelry-- at least to begin with. There is so much to choose from on the market, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check the classifieds section of the forum...you will find some great deals there...

Good Luck,

Nick

I agree. For that amount of money you would be better off getting a top of the line used machine
vs a new ok machine. Minelab Sovereign comes to mind.

I'd look hard at the Tesoro Vaquero. Can be found for around $420 and is an excellent detector for the money. Doesn't have the tid, but has the discrimination, depth and the manual ground balance for mineralized soil, is light weight and comes with a lifetime warranty. My two bits.
