I picked up $25 in pennies after work yesterday, and went through them last night and this afternoon. The $10 in nickels were pretty disappointing, with only 1 keeper, a 1948 S (low mintage, only 11M), but did really good with the pennies, scoring 18 wheats, 4 older canadians, and a NICE set of 1959 P and D in the same roll. Also found what I think may be an error penny, but I'm going to post that in a different thread. Here's the results:

Nickels:

1948S

Pennies:

1916D -1
1936P -1
1941P -1
1942P -1
1944P -3
1945P -1
1951D -1
1952P -1
1953P -1
1953D -1
1955D -1
1956P -1
1956D -1
1957D -2
1958P -1

Canadians:

1940
1945
1955
1957

Misc:

1959P-1
1959D-1
Bermuda 1971 1 cent

And the possible error. Not bad!! Pics are below, thanks for looking!

Great finds! Love those pre-1940 wheats!

I know two causes for the damaged penny (yep, it's probably not an error) -

1) A technique called "spooning" where people gently tap the side of a coin, usually with a spoon or other tool, to get the edges rolled over. Once in this state the center is punched thru to make a ring. This was a common practice with silver coins for decades but I've never seen it attempted with a zinc penny.

2) I've seen pennies emerge from washing machines after being stuck for years against the rotating drum. The edges turn in just like this.

You did well with the wheaties, congratulations!

Those 59's are BEAUTIFUL! Nice finds!
