Best way to clean coins?

Hi Folks!

I have a coffee can full of filthy coins! Most were found in a park near the ocean and are nearly black from salt water exposure. I tried cleaning them with CLR but it took a long time to soak and scrub them and they turned a strange reddish color. Is there an easier way? My bank won't take them in their dirty condition, and I don't want to lose nearly 10% of their value in one of those coin-sorting machines. Is there a product that will clean them easily? Many, many thanks!

You can put them one of the stamp machine located at our US Post Offices, and then push the coin return, it takes pennies too. When I do that I use a coin tumbler with a little sand, household ammonia, dish soap and water. Tumble for about 20 minutes or so and then they are ready for vending machines.

I use a tumbler with comet and water and a little sand. 20 minutes and they are clean enough to go to the bank
