look under waterbury button company webpage -- they have a backmark guide. that will help you -- figger it out

Scovill - Waterbury Mfg. co. has been around for a long time. So they made a number of buttons that extended from 1849 to the 1960's. Your button is from the turn of the century up to 1965...... HH :)

A clear photo makes a difference sometimes and in yours I think that backmark was early in the period of the Great Seal Button, cannot say WWI, but will say most likely one of the earliest of that type of button. I looked at my Dad's Great Seal buttons from his WW2 uniform and they are all backmarked WATERBURY BUTTON CO. * CONN *

The dotted inner ring appears to have not been used after the early 1900's..

Hey Dave, according to the back mark which appears to be SCOVILL MF"G CO WATERBURY I believe your button may be older than you think. Here's you a list of SCOVILL back marks with probable dates, it is what they call a Great Seal Button, the question is what year did they first make the Great Seal, I'm not sure.

The Scovill Companies

J.M.L. & W.H. SCOVILL 1827-1840

SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO.  1850-1960

SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY 1850-1865

Very Nice Button friend.

Just discovered this tid bit of info on a US military site note:

U.S. Great Seal Button

With the adoption of the Great Seal in 1783, Army buttons begin to reflect it. By 1854 all enlisted personnel wore -- and after 1902 all personnel had -- the Great Seal button, except engineer officers, who retained their distinctive branch button.

This button with this paticular back mark could be between 1854 and 1865

For clearification...

It's a Scovill COmpany... it just happened to be in Waterbury Conn.

It's not a Waterbury button...

Right?

According to the back mark it is a SCOVILL BUTTON MADE IN WATERBURY, not a Waterbury Button made in Waterbury. I just wonder if an older piece was used on the back of this button or if an old die was used by mistake when they manufactured the back piece for this Great Seal Button  :icon_scratch:

The Scovill Mfg. Co. was founded in 1802 in Waterbury, CT. The Waterbury Button Co. Was founded in 1812
