Doubt I'll ever be able to see that date well, but at least I know its a capped bust variety now so that at least gives me a date range. Think I should continue soaking it in olive oil, or leave good enough alone ?? Can olive oil ruin it ?

From what I've read, alot of people are split on whether to use olive oil or not. Although it does have some acidity, i believe, it would take a long time for a coin to lose any mass. I have heard of coins soaked in olive oil leaching out oil for years afterwards. let us know how it turns out. Cheers.

Cool find, try using H2O2

Well, it is not a "capped bust" , no such thing in Half Cents, it is a Classic Head Half Cent, 1809-1836 and you should most definitely be able to get a date off of that, can almost make it out on the blurry photo.

Not thrilled about the olive oil, but that is your choosing, I would recommend trying to use aluminum foil for getting the date, put the shiny side towards the Obverse side and rub with your thumb for a good impression, hopefully you can make out the date.

I usually cut off 2 inch square from a few inches of aluminumfoil and have ready to use for coins like that.

Congrats on the Half cent BTW, a lot never find one......

I like Kano Kroil. It eats crud and rust. It ate the crud off an aluminum tag for me and didn't appear to harm the tag in any way. The can says it won't harm metal. It made numbers visible on the tag after eating a bunch of the crud off. It has been soaking in it for almost a month now.

I think it would be alright if it leeched oil for a while. After all, without the oil loosening the crud you, you wouldn't get a good look at it anyway. Small price to pay for something we can't see anyway, I think.

Laater...
