BH 4" and Magnatite/Black Sand

I'm a newb and this may be one of those newb questions so hope ya'll not laughing yet. I have a BH 101which I understand is now called the BH IV. My question is with a 4" coil would it be possible to detect consentrations of black sand in a creek bed? Black sand = gold this would be a place to start panning /sluicing. Just asking.

Re: BH 4" and Magnetite/Black Sand

There are no dumb questions as we all had to start somewhere.

Black sand is magnetic and no detector regardless of the size coil can handle it well. Upgraded detectors with ground balance and more frequencies have a better time of it and are lots more productive. Pulse units work well there and they cost $$$ more than BH's. When manufacturers say their detectors can find gold, it usually means a nugget as big as a car hood and not the small ones.

You'd do better with a few sample panning operations to see if it had potential.
