I’ve had a couple people ask me to post the play by play on finding this copper. Me and my diggin’ buddy hit a number of large, old city parks with a lot of success. Monday, we went back to a park where I found a barber quarter and a mercury dime the previous Friday. We set our sights on a patch of woods about 200 yards wide between the walking path and the street. We just headed up the hill and now that I’m getting used to my equinox I set it on the park 1 feature with standard discrimination and the sensitivity on full blast at 25. Within 10 minutes I popped out my 1919 mercury dime, then a bale seal. I was very happy with the little silver and continued my line through the scrub brush. About 10 minutes later, I got a deep repeatable 24-26 signal, hoping it was another silver, I popped my plug and out flopped a copper. I dug three coppers over the weekend and they were identifiable but not in very good condition so my expectations were low. I gave it a swipe with my thumb and could barely make out a wreath, flipped it over and couldn’t make out what I was looking at. I actually thought it was a token or maybe a Vermont state copper and put it in my bag and kept swinging. I met up with my buddy and showed him, He couldn’t see much either. So after about another hour, I pulled a 1904 IHP with some spoooge on the obverse we decided to change parks. We went on to the other park were I pulled out a railroad token and my white whale ( 1908-s barber dime). By this time it was time to pick up the kids at school so we headed for the vehicles. I pulled the copper from my pouch and it had enough time to dry and the details slow started to peak out. I’m no expert on Nova Constellatio’s but my diggin’ buddy has seen one dug a few towns over and he said that what it looked like. I still had my doubts until I got home and googled some examples, then I posted my original post here. I did lightly tooth pick it but that made me too nervous and I really didn’t want to screw it up so I put it in a flip. I’ve been thinking a lot about how to get it to its best possible state so I’ve decided to send it to PCGS for cleaning and authentication. I’ll post pictures when I get it back probably in October or November. Thanks for lookin’ good luck and happy huntin’!!!
