Is the handle wood or bone ? the blade rusted away but the handles intact.

Great find.
 
Thanks..the handle is a hardwood.
It was completely crusted over with sandstone.

One more little detail.. it looks like the word "paid" was etched into the hand guard...with a possible initial below it.
