Blade weapon found at Second Seminole war site.

Is the handle wood or bone ? the blade rusted away but the handles intact.

Thanks..the handle is a hardwood.
It was completely crusted over with sandstone.

charcoal and tissue...make a rubbing...perhaps that will bring it out...I can not read it either...

One more little detail.. it looks like the word "paid" was etched into the hand guard...with a possible initial below it.
