Over the last few days I have been slowly working a piece of gravel into a fine little point. I used a small hammerstone, a broken drill bit, a brick and a small quartz flake to shape it. Roughed it out with the hammerstone, chipped it down with the quartz and shaped it with the drillbit then ground it smooth with a brickface and water like a whetstone. The last polishing was with a hunk of porcelain "Johnstone"(broken toilet shard). Add water and polish away. I always wondered why flint knappers started with palm sized chunks to make their small points. Now I know.
I know it's not a flaked masterpiece by any means but it's handmade and I have new found respect for those that made their own. Plus it feels good in my hand. I might add some notches.

Very nice point there GL! I like that style, looks great smooth like that. That will look good on a neck chain or leather cord.

Happy knappin! Boredom can often produce good results. I am working on a hand pecked war club right now that I will post later.

Can't wait to see more of your work!

That is awesome!!!!!!! Great job

If that's your first work, you're going to be turning out some masterpieces shortly.

Very nice.

Great job. Good looking point.

If you're wanting signs of flaking, I've found that the tip end of a deer antler works great. It's softer than the stone and grabs it nicely. You're absolutely right! Spending a few hours at this gives you a lot of respect for their workmanship with totally primitive tools. Make some more.

That's a nice looking point- looks really labor intensive but looks good. If you get into making points you'll find knapping to be easier and that John stone make GREAT starter material to learn on. Just a hammer stone and John stone will make some good points. Old glass bottles make good cheap practice material also.
