Try and kick down the sens a bit and look for any kind of electrical interference, (power lines, fast food microwaves, underground lines, ect) is it possible you are using a different brand of batteries than before? check coil connection.

I use the same detector, on the same setting most the time. I think that those are broken tones indicating junk or trash but they can sound similar to the high/low tones you get from the 12 o'clock position. Sometimes I will get a very faint high tone also and it is usually something deeper, just at the end of the machines reach, but I tend to only dig if it repeats consistently.

Can different battery brand really change the tone?

Some batteries are slightly longer or shorter, (this effects units with the pop in feature on the battery set) and the plug fitting can be loose with some brands, so it could effect how the batteries are connected or stay connected. Also the true amount of juice the detector is getting.
