This is Jim D posting on Fast Dave's computer. I decided to clean a few of the V nickels I have found this year and I was suprised to find that I had found a really rare one. An 1885. Ouch! Too bad the condition of this one will relegate it to being a conversation piece. In seventeen years of metal detecting this would have been the most valuable non silver coin I have ever dug. Check out the price guide on this one and you will understand why I said "ouch"! Oh well. Good hunting everyone. Jim D.

hard to check without a book ???

Fast Dave here, posting for Jim D. The last time I picked up a Redbook was 2006, but at that time the nickel was worth $425.00 in G-4, $500.00 in VG-8 and $650 in F-12. VF-20 would bring $750 and EF-40 was $900. After that you're into the Land of Four Figures.
