Brass cavalry? spur found at 1800's home site
Finally got out to a site I have been wanting to hit all year, but it has been in soybeans up until this week. With the harvest completed, I hit the site late this evening for a preliminary run and immediately hit a lot of big old iron and assorted farm detritus along the perimeter. I moved farther out into the field where I know the house stood and on the back side of the property I pulled this old brass spur from the ground. Nightfall ended my hunt much earlier than I wanted (dang daylight savings) but I hope to get out there again next week. My initial brief research tonight leads me to think this could be a cavalry spur from the 1800's, maybe even civil war era as the site is only a short distance from several known battle sites (Missouri) and saw a lot of movement of troops on both sides through the area during the conflict.
Anyone with greater experience or info than mine is welcomed to chime in and enlighten me as to whether this is a possible war time relic or a more common run-of-the-mill riding spur of later date. It has no markings or engraved areas, just smooth brass all around except for a few nicks from farm implements. The rowel is missing as well, so no help there. Thanks in advance for any input!
